What is a domain name?

A domain name is a unique address or identifier on the World Wide Web. One easily recognizable example is google.com: Type that domain name in your browser address bar, and the worldwide system of name servers connects your computer to the content of the Google web site.

Domain names are sometimes referred to as the real estate of the World Wide Web. A domain name gives you exclusive rights to a unique parcel on the Internet landscape.

What is a Premium Domain?

Premium Domains are highly desirable, privately owned domain names offered at a price higher than we normally charge for domain names. These domain names have an established Web presence and a solid traffic history, and are offered at prices commensurate with their value as Internet real estate.

For Premium Domains, you pay the higher price once. In future years the renewal rate is the usual low rate charged for any domain name with that TLD (the extension, such as .com).

How do I find out whether the domain name I’m interested in is available?

Log in. In the "Register A Domain" text box, type the domain name you want to register. Click "GO". The response shows whether the domain name you typed is available, and also shows alternatives and Premium Domains.

If none of the suggested domain names meet your needs, use the search box to check the availability of another domain name.

How do I search for a Premium Domain?

All of our tools for searching regular domain names return Premium Domains alongside the search results for normal domain names.

In addition, we offer a search tool that returns only Premium Domains. To search for Premium Domains, hover on "Domains" and then click "Premium Domains". In the "Enter a search term" box, type a domain name, and then click "Search". The results show available Premium Domains and their prices.

How do I register a domain name?

Log in and search for a domain name or a premium domain.

When you find a domain name you want that is available, select the check box next to it and click "Add to Cart".

What is preconfiguration?

Preconfiguration is providing contact and organization information that some country registries require.

Preconfiguration information is often used by registries that have "presence requirements"—requirements that the registrant and/or other contacts live or have documented organizations in the country.

How do I register a domain name that requires preconfiguration?

Log in. In the "Register A Domain" text box, type the domain name you want to register. Click "GO". Select the check box for the domain name you want and click "Add to Cart". To register a list of domain names, log in. In the "Domains" menu, click "Bulk Tools" and then click "Register Domains in bulk". In the "Domains to Register" text box, type in the domain names you want to register. Complete the rest of the form and click "Add To Cart". Click "Go to my cart". Double-check the contents of the cart and then click "Checkout Now". Select the "Terms and Conditions" check box and click "Submit Order".

I have six names in my shopping cart awaiting checkout, but there is one name I do not want. Can I delete just that one, or do I have to delete all of them and start over?

You can delete just one name. In the row of the item you don’t want, click the red X.

What forms of payment do you accept for Premium Domains?

For Premium Domains up to $5000, we charge your account balance. For Premium Domains $5000 and over, we offer you the option of using either your account balance or a wire transfer.

If you choose to pay by wire transfer, instructions display when you complete the domain purchase through our shopping cart. The wire transfer must reach us within 10 days of purchase.

How will I know when I gain control of the Premium Domain I’ve purchased?

We send you an order confirmation email when we place the Premium Domain in your account.

What if I change my mind, or spell a name wrong. Can I get my money back?

No, all sales are final, so please double-check before finalizing your purchase.

How do I manage a Premium Domain?

Manage a Premium Domain as you would any other domain name.

Is there anything I can do to protect my domain names from hijacking?

Yes. We offer Registrar-Lock, which prevents your domain names from being transferred without your permission.

To set Registrar-Lock for all domains you register in the future, log in and click "Settings". Select the "Do not allow names to be transferred" check box. Click "save changes".

To apply Registrar-Lock to all domain names you’ve already registered, log in and click "Settings". At the bottom of the page click "Global Edit Wizard". Select "Manual input" and click "next". To set Auto Renew for all domains you will register in the future, log in and click "Settings". On the "default options" tab, select the "Renew the registration of domain names" check box and click "save changes".

To apply Auto Renew to all domain names you’ve already registered, log in and click "Settings". At the bottom of the page click "Global Edit Wizard". Select "Manual input" and click "next". Select "Automatic Renewal" and click "next". Select "All Domains" and click "next". Click "next". Confirm that the "Attempt to automatically renew" check box is selected and click "next". Click "submit".

I want to register all of my domains for 5 years at a time. How do I do this?

Log in and click "Settings". At the top of the "default options" tab select the number of default years, and then click "save changes".

This will apply to all domains that are registered, hosted, or renewed in your account. We cannot provide a refund for extra years purchased by mistake.

Domain Renewals

What is domain name renewal?

When you register a domain name, you gain exclusive rights to that domain name for a period of time but not forever. It’s more like a lease than a purchase. In effect, renewing extends your lease on the domain name.

How do I renew a domain name?

Log in and click "My Account". Click "Registered Domains". Click the domain name you want to renew. Click "Add Years". Use the dropdown menu to select the number of years you want to renew, and click "Checkout Now". Click "Submit Order".

When can I renew a domain name?

You can renew a domain name almost any time, and you can extend the expiration date up to 10 years from current expiration date.

Why is it important to renew my domain name before it expires?

The registry allows a short period of time to renew at your normal registration price, but then they raise the price considerably, and if you don’t pay the grace period redemption price they delete the name. Once the name enters the deletion queue, we lose the ability to retrieve it for you. You have to compete for it on its deletion date, and if you’re able to regain it, it may be expensive. We strongly recommend renewing your domains well in advance of their expiration dates to avoid the frustration and expense of this process.

.BIZ

Who can register .BIZ domain names?

.BIZ has no residency requirements and is open to anyone in the world to register, as long as they have a business or represent a bona fide commercial entity.

Do I need to be a business to register a .BIZ?

Yes. While .BIZ does no filtering when you register, it is possible for users to report non-business related .BIZ sites to the registry, which may lead to the deletion of the domain. You must be using the domain for a valid commercial purpose, or else a .BIZ domain may be at risk.

.CA

Do I need to have a Canadian Presence?

Yes, all .CA domains are reserved exclusively for individuals and non-individuals located in Canada.

What information do I need to provide up front?

You must choose your Canadian Presence Requirement field, e.g. Citizen, Corporation, and that is it. You will not be required to submit any paperwork during the domain registration.

I heard that .CA domains are now a real time registry, what does that mean?

CIRA, the registry organization that manages .CA, has been operating on a legacy system that was slow and not in real time. .CA domains will now be handled very much like .ORG and .US domains, meaning everything is instant!

I’m an existing .CA domain owner, how does the new registry system affect me?

The new registry system will not affect you at all. Your domain will continue to operate just as normal and you won’t need to update any information at all. It only makes registration and transfers much easier.

I would like to transfer my domains to eNom now, how can I do that?

Very simple! Make sure your domain is unlocked at your existing domain provider and get the Authorization Code for that domain. Log in to your eNom account and go through the transfers path, submit your Authorization Code and checkout. That is it. There is no follow up email confirmation or requirement to go to the registry.

I used to have to login to my account at CIRA and manage my domains there. Do I still have to do that?

No! There will be no more need to go to CIRA to manage a domain, complete a registration or transfer. All domain management can be done through your account.

.ME

What is .ME?

.ME is an Internet top-level domain (TLD) that approved by ICANN. The .ME Registry (the d.b.a of doMEn, d.o.o.) was chosen by the government of Montenegro to operate the new .ME domain name extension.

Who can register a .ME domain?

Me domains (second-level registrations) are available to be registered by parties worldwide, and there are no nexus requirements. Third-level registrations (net.me, org.me, etc.) are available to Montenegrin individuals and entities only, in the following zones.

What characters are allowed?

Only the Latin alphabet letters a-z, digits, and hyphens are currently accepted in a domain name. Domain names cannot begin or end with hyphens. Internationalized domain names (IDNs) may be offered in the future, but in the meantime the registry does not currently accept letters with accent marks, Cyrillic characters, etc. Domain names with hyphens in the third and fourth positions are prohibited.

How long can a .ME domain name be?

The minimum length of .ME domain name is 3 characters, and the maximum length is 63 characters (excluding the "http://www" and ".ME" portions). All second-level domain names of at least 5 characters in length that are comprised solely of numerals or numerals and hyphens shall be blocked from registration, and reserved for future registration and use as determined by the Registry.

.MOBI

What is .mobi?

.mobi is a top-level domain (TLD) approved by ICANN, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers. .mobi is unique – it is the first top level domain dedicated to delivering the internet to the mobile phone. .mobi is sponsored by a consortium of companies which includes the most prominent mobile and Internet players in the world.

What is a Style Guide?

.mobi, the company behind the .mobi domain, publishes style guides known as the .mobi Switch On!™ Guides to ensure that the user experience of the web on a mobile device is as good as possible. Switch On! Guides act as a guide and reference for domain holders (registrants) when building the content and services associated with their domain. Switch On! Guides are composed of mandatory rules, highly recommended best practices and optional best practices. Compliance with mandatory rules is one of the terms and conditions of using a .mobi domain. Switch On! Guides will be published for a range of domain services types, starting with the Web Developers Guide, which covers web browsing interaction. Go to .mobi Switch On! Guides for more information.

Why should I register a .mobi domain?

Existing Internet protocols and practices are designed for desktop PC-oriented services, not for mobile phones. Today, more and more people want to access the Internet from their mobile phones; however, there is a lack of mobile-friendly Internet sites, content and applications. A .mobi domain ensures your website visitors that your website is truly a mobile-friendly site and delivers a consistent and reliable user experience.

Who can register a .mobi domain?

.mobi domains are available for anyone to register, anywhere in the world.

What are the valid characters for a .mobi domain name?

.mobi domain names can contain the English-language letters A through Z, and the digits 0 through 9. You can also use hyphens, but hyphens cannot begin or end your domain name. Spaces and special characters (such as: !, $, &, ë, and so on) are never permitted.

What about non-English language characters?

Internationalized Domain Names (IDNs) are domain names that are represented by native language, non-ASCII characters. The native language domain name is followed by the Top Level Domain (TLD), such as .mobi. An example of an IDN is: müller.mobi. .mobi intends to support Internationalized Domain Names (IDN)s in the future. More Information will follow when available.

How long can a .mobi domain name be?

The minimum length of .mobi domain name is 3 characters, and the maximum length is 63 characters (excluding the "http://www" and ".MOBI" portions).

Do I have to have a web site associated with my .mobi registration to be compliant?

No, but once you have a site, it must be compliant. If you wish to put up content at once, .mobi has a "parked page" template as well as a template for a simple web site that you can use. You can access these tools in our developer community, dev.mobi.

.ORG

Why Register A .ORG?

Trusted across all backgrounds, ages and nationalities, .ORG is where people turn to find credible information, get involved, fund causes and support advocacy. As a premier domain, .ORG provides an unrivaled channel to share ideas, to enhance lives, and to advance your mission.

What is the Advantage of .ORG domains?

When you buy a .ORG, your organization is linked to a well-established brand of trust and integrity. One of the original top-level domains (TLDs), .ORG became the registry of choice for organizations dedicated to serving the public interest, and today .ORG is considered one of the most trusted domains on the internet.

If your organization is a noncommercial entity, people expect to find you in the .ORG community - nonprofits, foundations, philanthropic and cultural institutions, religious, civic, arts, social and fraternal organizations, health and legal services, clubs and community volunteer groups.

Commercial businesses also benefit. Registering with .ORG lends credibility to the activities of a charitable arm, and it also protects your brand and trademark as represented in your other domain name TLD registrations.

Who registers .ORG domains?

Large and small, local and global, .ORGs influence our world every day, effecting positive change on our planet. Check out the extraordinary organizations that have been nominated for the Webby Awards. View the Webby .ORGs

Can I register a .ORG domain name?

Yes. .ORG always has been -- and will continue to be -- an open and unrestricted domain. Anyone is allowed to register and use .ORG domain names.

.ORG is the home for millions of nonprofit Web sites, including charitable, artistic, scientific, personal, educational, social, cultural and religious sites.

.ORG sites are run by clubs, incorporated and unincorporated not-for-profit organizations, industry associations, families, individuals, schools, foundations, and more. Even for-profit companies have .ORG sites devoted to their noncommercial activities, such as charitable or volunteer programs.

Many noncommercial organizations conduct commerce to support their activities. Examples include clubs that raise funds, hospitals, noncommercial Web sites that run advertising to support their operations, etc.

Why can't I register a one-character or two-letter .ORG domain name?

Certain domain names are to be reserved per ICANN's directive. The domain names listed there, including all one-character and two-character domains, are reserved "from initial (i.e., other than renewal) registration within the TLD." In other words, should any of those previously registered domain names be allowed to expire, or if they are deleted, they will be placed on reserved status and will NOT be made available to the public for registration again.

I found a .ORG Web site that is commercial in nature. Is this allowed?

Yes. .ORG is an unrestricted top-level domain, and anyone can register.

.PRO

Am I eligible to register a .PRO domain under the new registration rules?

To register a .PRO domain name, you must be:

  • A person or entity who provides professional services.
  • Admitted to or licensed by a government certification body or jurisdictional licensing entity recognized by a governmental body that regularly verifies the accuracy of its data.
  • In good standing with the licensing authority.

Verification: What is the process for Authentication and Verification of Registrant Information?

The .PRO TLD is further distinguishable from other domain extensions because of its unique registration requirements. .PRO registration requires a three-step verification process:

  1. RegistryPRO, the .PRO registry, will send the Registrant Contact an email address describing the instructions on where to submit Authentication and Verification information. You must complete this step within 44 days; otherwise you risk losing your domain.
  2. The identity information provided and self-certified by the registrant is used to activate your name.
  3. The self-certified professional data provided by the registrant is randomly verified against an appropriate licensing or accreditation database.

What information will RegistryPro require from me to activate my domain?

You will need to provide:

  • Name
  • Profession
  • Jurisdictional country
  • Licensing authority
  • License number
  • A link to your licensing authority's Web site

Will my professional credentials be subject to review?

Yes, RegistryPro will monitor new and renewed .PRO domains to ensure compliance with all terms and conditions of our agreements. You may be required to provide additional information to the registry in order to activate or retain your domain.

Will I be able to register my second-level resolving domain right away?

Yes, RegistryPro offers second-level registrations to qualified registrants who meet the professional eligibility requirements.

Do I need to have a third-level domain (eg., mycompany.law.pro) to register a second-level domain (eg., mycompany.pro)?

No, RegistryPro will continue to offer third-level profession specific second level domains (PSSLDs), such as yourcompany.med.pro, but the requirement of using a third-level domain name to get a second-level domain has been eliminated.

Will I be eligible to register second-level .Pro domains, e.g. domainname.Pro, if it’s not in accountancy, law, medical or engineering?

All professionals and professional entities who self-certify that they meet the eligibility requirements are able to register .PRO domains. If you own a business license, you may qualify if:

  • You are a person or entity who provides professional services.
  • You have been admitted to or licensed by a government certification body, or jurisdictional licensing entity recognized by a governmental body.
  • That body or licensing entity requires that its members be licensed or admitted to provide services.
  • You are in good standing.

Are there any residency restrictions?

No, residents of any country can register a .PRO domain name.

.TEL

I just bought a .tel domain, how long does it take for it to become live?

The registry updates their files every six hours, so it may take up that long after purchase for a .tel domain to become active.

What are the restrictions on a .tel domain?

There are no restrictions, any person or business anywhere in the world can register a .tel domain name.

Can I protect my private data?

.tel not only gives you the flexibility to update your contact information on the fly, it also lets you control what information is publicly viewable. You can even segment which individuals have access to different pieces of your private information.

For what term can I buy a .tel domain?

You can register .tel domain names for up to 10 years.

How do transfers work?

You may transfer a .tel domain just like any other gTLD, however, once the domain is in the account it will not become active until it is associated to a CTH account. In other words, it will lose the CTH account from the losing registrar.

Why can’t any value added services be used with .tel domains?

All nameservers and host records are controlled by the registry, so no VAS can be used with .tel domain names at this time.

Why is there preconfiguration information needed?

This information is required to set up the account in the Community Tel Hosting (CTH) area. A .tel account in the CTH will not resolve and the domain create will not complete the registration process until an account has been successfully created.

Can I transfer or sell a .tel domain name?

You can sell or transfer a .tel domain just as you would with other domain names.

What is .tel?

The .tel is a service that allows individuals and businesses alike to store and manage all their contact information and keywords directly in the DNS without the need to build, host or manage a website. For more information, see .tel for businesses and .tel for individuals.

Why is .tel different than other Top Level Domains (TLDs)?

The value of a .tel domain lies with the ability to host personal (or corporate) contact information directly in the DNS, which can then be universally accessible. This stands in contrast to the typical use of the DNS for other TLDs, in which the DNS only provides a mapping between domain names and IP addresses.

What can .tel do for my business?

With a .tel, you can:

  • Route customers to appropriate departments and locations
  • Increase online discoverability
  • Connect with your customers from any device
  • Gain an effective mobile presence
What is a NAPTR record?

A Naming Authority PoinTeR Record (or NAPTR) is a standard DNS resource record that allows storage of contact information (URIs) within DNS. They are defined in more detail as part of RFC 3403.

How are NAPTR records stored?

They are contained within a DNS server, such as BIND or PowerDNS.

Does the reseller need to install any additional software on its DNS servers?

The .tel domain is all about controlling the contact information held in the NAPTR records. The majority of common DNS servers support the storage of NAPTRs, but don't allow end-users to control them.

Where do I send customers once they have purchased a .tel domain name to configure their information?

All .tel domain owners must go to https://account.telhostingpanel.com to fill in the rest of their information. Username and password are created during the domain purchase process.

Is there a test area for the Community TelHosting Account?

Yes, you may create an account and login at: https://sandbox.telhostingpanel.com
